"The Hundredth Dove"

Have you ever gone hunting before? If you have, then have you ever shot a white dove or even any bird? This book is called “The Hundredth Dove” and the book is by Jane Yolen. That’s what this book is mainly about, shooting birds, but the only difference there is, is that this story is based on the olden days. I was thinking if the author had written this book based on how people think about their lives and not always having to listen to other people and what they have to say.

In this book there is a main character and his name is Hugh. There is also a king and a queen that the king is going to get married to. The book is placed in the old England. The queen that is almost married “was neat as a bird, slim and fair, with black eyes.” What I think of this book is that the man that is always getting what the king is asking, does not like to be told what to do. That is probably why he quit in the ending. In the book, the man named Hugh is always listening to the king and what he has to do for him, but that is his job. So, close to the end of the book, the king tells Hugh to go and fetch 100 doves for their dinner for after the wedding.

So the first day, he gets 20 birds with no trouble. The second day he get 21 birds but he has a little trouble, he has all gray doves except one. The one dove was a white dove white as milk. So somehow, that one dove escapes from the net, but the hunter did not know how that happened. So then he only had 20 birds. That last time that he needs to get some birds, the same thing happens and he made sure that the bird would not get away by making sure that there were no holes in the net. But the dove still got out. That is kind of what I would do if I was going to get a lot of doves for my dad like being the king in the story.

The hunter finally gets the white dove and takes it to the king and shows the king, then rips the doves head off, I think that’s not very nice. It’s like going up to your dog and ripping its head off, or a cat or whatever animal you have and ripping those animals heads off. I would probably not work for the king like the hunter did for the rest of my life. So the hunter went back to his and lived off of berries for the rest of his life and never shot another bird for the rest of his life.
